Can I get rid of a tailor's bunion without surgery?

Asked 3 years ago

Morning! Are there any things I can try doing that may shrink a tailors bunion and avoid going for surgery? I'm terrified of these things and would much rather avoid going for an operation.

Hey, I understand your frustration about going under the knife. Here are a few ways to reduce chances of surgery or slow the progression of a tailor's bunion.

  • Maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI).
  • A moleskin or gel-filled pad, which can be purchased at a drugstore, can be used to protect the bunion.
  • Shoe inserts can assist with proper foot positioning. These can be over-the-counter arch supports or orthotic devices prescribed by a doctor.
  • Wear a splint at night under the supervision of a doctor to keep the toe straight and relieve discomfort.
  • Take ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.
  • Warm soaks, ice packs, a Whirlpool, ultrasound, and massage are all viable choices.
  • Purchase footwear with a broad toe area and a good fit. Shop at a store where the professionals can take your foot measurements and fit you with the right shoe.

It's okay you're hesitant to undergo surgery. There are alternate ways to fix a bunion without surgery, including;

  • Foot mobilization exercises;
  • use of splints & toe spacers;
  • massage;
  • shoes with low heels and wide toe boxes;
  • orthotics

These reduce the load on the toe, slow the progression of the deformity and promote healing.
