What is the best way to treat a turf toe injury?
Asked 2 years ago
Does anyone know if it's better to get shoes/insoles or get surgery or just let the injury play out? I suffered a turf toe injury about two weeks ago playing football and it's still swollen which makes me think the injury could be worse than I originally thought. I'd just like to know what my options are as far as treatment goes if the problem doesn't go away. Thanks !

The treatment for turf toe depends on the severity of the injury. If it's a mild case of turf toe, the swelling will be minimal and should resolve within some days with rest. More severe injuries may require immobilization for longer. During this period, insoles can help minimize the stress on the joint during walking.

Depending on the extent of your injury, rest and time to allow for healing are the best form of treatment at this stage. So, you need to reduce the amount of strain you place on your foot by stopping exercise and spending less time on your feet during the day. You can also apply ice to help reduce inflammation and pain.
Orthotics or insoles with a stiff sole are extremely beneficial in managing turf toe injuries or strains. The stiffer insole will reduce the flexion in your big toe and forefoot, thereby reducing the potential for flexion injuries to your forefoot (the cause of turf toe). Upstep’s custom orthotics can alleviate and prevent this type of injury when used in sports shoes, while providing support to your entire foot as you play. Thereafter, gradually returning to walking, running and sporting activities is suggested. You can increase the time, distance, and intensity in small increments to avoid your injury from flaring up again. Surgery is usually only considered after a lengthy period of time with repetitive injuries and if conservative methods, as mentioned above, have failed.
