Types of shoes that cause hammertoe?

Hi everyone. My little one is about to turn 5 and I'd like to get him some new shoes. Both my wife and I have big feet with long toes and hammertoe. I'm thinking it's quite likely that he will experience the same. Is it possible to prevent this with different types of shoes? I'd like to try and prevent it at an early age if possible. Thanks !

Yes, genetics can predispose your little one to hammertoes but you can reduce the risk by getting him shoes with a wider toe box, with at least half an inch between the longest toe and the inner tip of the shoe.  You can also get soft, cushioned insoles for his shoes.
