Podiatrist vs. chiropractor: What is the difference?

Asked 3 years ago

I hurt my foot the other day when I slipped and fell down the stairs. I don't think it's sprained, because I've done that before and this doesn't feel the same. I went to the doctor for an x-ray because I thought maybe I broke it, but they said they couldn't see anything. I went home and rested with it up, but it's been 3 days and the ball of my foot is still swollen and bruised. I can barely stand on it. I'm not sure if I should be seeing a podiatrist or a chiropractor?

Both podiatrists and chiropractors are healthcare professionals who treat different structural injuries or defects that occur within the body.

But there is a difference:

  • Podiatrists treat conditions that are related to the feet, ankles, and legs.
  • Chiropractors treat many parts of the body, with a deep focus on the spine.
  • After diagnosing a disease or injury, chiropractors provide treatment through manipulations, adjustment of joints and spine with massage as well. However, Podiatrists provide treatment through, pain killers or medication, surgery, and the prescription of orthotics.

Podiatrists spend four years studying the anatomy, function, and diseases of the foot. Chiropractors spend their time on the study of the spine. Podiatrists are able to use multiple modalities to treat foot problems from palliative care, medication, to surgery.

While podiatrists and chiropractors manage pain, the two professionals differ. Podiatrists focus on the foot, ankle and lower limb generally. Chiropractors use spinal manipulation to address symptoms of chronic pain, muscle aches, numbness, and fatigue around the body. Again, while podiatrists can prescribe drugs, chiropractors do not.
