Will arch supports help sciatica?

Asked 3 years ago

Hi, I have supination in both my feet, and I've been battling with sciatica since. Therefore, I think it's a side effect of my high arches. It takes sense to me that arch supports could be the answer.

Over supination is not a frequent problem in most people. Everyone strikes the ground on the middle to the outside edge of the heel and then as their weight moves over the foot it gradually rolls onto the inside of the foot and toes. Unless you have suffered some injury or have an abnormal geometry to your legs it is probably not a problem. A thorough evaluation by a sports medicine podiatrist including a gait analysis might be advised.

Yes. Supination, for example, is a neurological pattern of use that extends from your legs to your feet and up into your hips. Do you think it has nothing to do with sciatica? Think again.

Supination causes the little toe or lateral arch to become the only point of contact with the floor. Sensory input is disrupted as well as balanced function of the entire limb. The limb's anatomy comes into partial usage, and this is a pattern in which you're either having sciatica symptoms now or developing a future propensity for sciatica.

Indeed, your high arches may be contributing to your sciatica symptoms. In that case, proper arch support should minimize your symptoms. However, sciatica may also be because of some pathology in the back or malalignment in the knee and hip. In any case, arch supports will prove helpful.
