How do you know when you need orthotics?
Asked 3 years ago
I'm a fine dining waiter, and I spend long hours on my feet. Sometimes they are very achy at the end of the shift, and sometimes they even swell up a bit. Is this a sign that I should buy orthotics? If so, how much can I expect to pay for a pair?

Although some people with faulty feet mechanics don't have any symptoms, it can cause a lot of pain and suffering for others. With that in mind, many people with arch and foot deformities ask if they require arch support.
Foot deformities can be relieved by using over-the-counter arch supports. Alternatively, your doctor may recommend custom-made arch supports that are molded to the curves of your feet. Arch supports are frequently used to alleviate symptoms and speed up the healing process.
You need arch support when foot condition or deformity contributes to:
- Persistent stress
- Muscle soreness
- Poor posture
- Imbalance
- Alignment issues
- Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- Ongoing foot pain
- Overpronation
Wearing plantar fasciitis shoes with arch support can make not only your feet but your whole body feel notably better. Additionally, without adequate arch support, faulty foot biomechanics may lead to overuse injuries.
If you’re lucky enough not to experience any discomfort from the condition, going through great lengths to correct it, it may not be necessary. However, supportive footwear can benefit anyone, regardless of whether they have a foot deformity or not.
