What is an ultrasound-guided cortisone injection for foot pain?
Asked 3 years ago
I know that it is some form of steroid injection, but I am quite confused as to how they do it and what exactly it is. Could anyone explain?

Ultrasound can be utilised to guide the injection of steroid and local anaesthesia into foot tissues such as tendons, in addition to establishing the diagnosis of tendinopathy or tenosynovitis. Cortisone injections can be administered to the exact spot needed to relieve pain using ultrasound imaging as a guidance. We can use a smaller dosage since the imaging technology is so accurate, and we know the cortisone will reach its target. For example, a single dexamethasone or steroid injection guided by ultrasonography is a safe and effective short-term treatment for plantar fasciitis. At four weeks, it relieves more foot pain than placebo and lowers abnormal swelling for up to three months.
